Yachad/NJCD provides opportunities for children and adults with disabilities to be included into the community through social programming, schools, vocational training, summer camps, employment, and so much more. Please help us to continue to provide and expand these services. When you donate to Yachad for Purim, we will send you Purim cards to include in your Mishloach Manot or to send to those further away, to tell your family and friends that you have made a donation in their honor.

The Yad B’Yad Israel Experience brings high school students together with Yachad members (young adults and teens with special needs) on a fabulous Israel adventure. Participants form strong bonds of friendship and undergo personal growth as they experience the Jewish homeland, Israel, in a new and unparalleled way.

With safety always our first priority, our group enjoys time in Jerusalem, on an Israeli army base, at the Kineret and Dead Sea, and many other fantastic locations. They ride camels, hike up Masada, and participate in special Shabbat programs. Participants also give back to the residents of Israel by doing community service work.

Yachad members experience Israel just as their peers do, forming incredible relationships with their new friends. High school students benefit from a unique opportunity to give to others while gaining introspective insight. The program begins with an orientation in upstate NY on Wednesday, July 17th, where our high school students receive background and preparation for (interacting with our Yachad members on) our Yad B’Yad program. The orientation is followed by a Shabbaton in the New Jersey area where the high school students meet up with the Yachad members and enjoy Shabbat. The group will depart for Israel, together, on Sunday, July 21st.

Day Habilitation “Without Walls” provides the additional time and targeted training which can help each individual to reach their own unique goals with regard to living and working more independently.

The program includes:

• Social Skills development
• Life skills training
• Individual and Group counseling
• Pre-vocational training
• Job placements
• Job coaching provided by highly skilled and caring staff
• Inclusive activities with community members and organizations
• Jewish cultural experiences
• Meaningful recreational activities

Day Habilitation “Without Walls” meets daily, Monday to Thursday, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm and Friday, 9:00 am to 2:00pm. The program provides transportation and travel training, as well as fitness activities. Committed to meeting the individual needs and desires of participants and their families, the Day Habilitation “Without Walls” program promotes self-esteem, self-determination and choice through activities which offer skill development, independence, and community inclusion.

The goal of the Day Habilitation “Without Walls” program is to help each person be the most they can be; to live and function as independently as possible within the community. Over time, participants move from home to more independent living, and access competitive jobs in the workplace, becoming proud, contributing members of society.

Additionally, Supplemental Day Habilitation is available upon request.

Bethia Gindi is a junior at YULA High School in Los Angeles, and a member of Team Yachad who ran at the Miami ING Half-Marathon last weekend. She sent a personal reflection on the race to Yachad:

I feel I have done many amazing things in my life. I have been to Africa and I have seen the sun rise over the Sahara. I have been to Venice, and I have seen the setting sun over the canals. I watched my family grow closer together after my grandfather passed away. I went on a cruise to Alaska and I saw the icebergs before they melted. I went on the NCSY GIVE summer program two summers ago and volunteered all over Israel; I went on Yachad’s Yad b’Yad trip this past summer and spent my entire summer becoming friends with Yachad members. I am on the Yachad board in Los Angeles and I have seen many people grow through Yachad and its programming.

But I have never done anything like the half-marathon. There is something about waking up at 3:30 in the morning and driving to the race after an amazingly inspirational Shabbat, after months and months of training and fundraising. There is something about running for something that you love, something that inspires you, something that has given you more than you could have ever hoped for. Yachad has changed my life in so many ways, I cannot even count, and this marathon was an amazing way for me to give back.

First the fundraising, which was really hard — I mean it is $3,000! But after a while it became fun, because I got to tell people about the organization I love so much. And then the training, which was brutal! I am not an athletic person, and I do not run. But I trained, not completely following the training schedule, but I did the best I could, and you know what? I made it.

And finally the marathon itself! It was unbelievable that I was running with over 20,000 people, and it was unbelievable that 135 of them were with Yachad. Crossing the finish line was the most amazing feeling I have ever experienced! I had just run 13.1 miles, and yet, crossing that finish line, I was not tired because I knew that I had done something amazing for Yachad! Of course, the tired and the sore set in after, but it was totally worth it, and I would not trade this experience for anything!

Biography’s of Clinical Staff
Dr. Jeffrey Lichtman, Clinical Director, is the National Director of Yachad/NJCD; Dean of IVDU School and Director of the New Jersey Association of Jewish Day Schools. He received his undergraduate and rabbinical training from Yeshiva University, where he also completed his doctorate. His areas of expertise include individual and group counseling, social skills training, and facilitating Inclusion and teacher training. Jeff served as a Psychologist and Principal of the SINAI High School in Teaneck; and psychologist to several other schools and agencies.

Dr. Joe Goldfarb is Assistant Director of Yachad/NJCD and Director of Summer Programs. He received his Ph.D. in Clinical and School Psychology from Hofstra University and his B.A. from Yeshiva University. His specific areas of focus include cognitive-behavioral treatment of anxiety and depressive disorders as well as behavior management of children. In addition, Dr. Goldfarb is an adjunct faculty member at Touro College, where he has taught courses in developmental psychology, abnormal psychology, personality, social psychology and the psychology of learning among several others. Aside from his clinical background, Dr. Goldfarb has devoted considerable time working in the areas of youth programming and informal education. He has worked at Camp Moshava for 10 summers and most recently has been an assistant head counselor.

Deborah Berman, LCSW, Senior Social Worker of Yachad/NJCD, previously served as Chief of the Interfaith Medical Center Outpatient Behavioral Health Program. She holds a Masters degree from the Columbia University School of Social Work and a B.A. in Jewish Studies from Hunter College. Deborah has served as a family, marital, and individual psychotherapist at Brooklyn Center for Psychotherapy in Park Slope, Interfaith Medical Center, and New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation. Additionally, she has a private psychotherapy practice in Greenwich Village dedicated to individuals and families as well as providing clinical supervision/mental health training to rabbis and seminary students from diverse Jewish backgrounds. Deborah lectures extensively in the U.S and abroad on
organizational management, professional development, clinical practice, multidisciplinary and cross-cultural treatment planning, and ethics.

Amanda Levy, LCSW, has worked with children and families for more than 20 years. She is currently the Family and Clinical Coordinator at Yachad/NJCD. She brings to this position a long history of experience coordinating services for
families caring for children with developmental disabilities and mental illness. Amanda also has a private practice serving families, couples, individuals and children. Amanda brings her warmth, enthusiasm, and “positive spin” into her work and
after all these years still loves what she does. She has been extensively trained in individual and family therapy as well as Hypnotherapy and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT).

PAYMENT
Payment for sessions can be made using cash, credit card, check or money order and are due
at the start of each session. A Sliding Scale (reduced fee) is available for individuals who require it,
and is determined prior to the start of services. The office is happy to provide you with receipts for
your payment.
CANCELLATION POLICY
If you are unable to attend your scheduled appointment, notify the office at least 24 hours
in advance so that your missed session will not be charged.
CONFIDENTIALITY
The Yachad/NJCD Counseling Center ensures a safe and private forum for all clients.
