On Monday, May 25, 2009 (Memorial Day), 9:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., at the JCC, the Special Needs Initiative of the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas, Yachad and Jewish Family Service will offer a day of speakers, presentations and resource information for families in the Jewish community who have a member with special needs. The day will be full of programming and activities for everyone in the family!
For the adults, the day will begin with a keynote address by psychologist, Dr. Jeff Lichtman, national director of Yachad and noted expert on the special needs community. Additionally, participants will choose breakout sessions from a wide variety of topics such as “The Challenge of Autism & Asperger’s Syndrome: How to Respond Effectively,” “ADHD and Other Challenging Behaviors,” “Understanding and Responding to Our Special Children’s Sexuality” and “the Legal and Financial Planning for Children with Special Needs.”
Children (preschool through high school) will participate in a full day of fun and exciting activities, including support groups, sports and games. It will be designed for both children with special needs and their typically functioning siblings.
A resource fair will take place during lunch so attendees can explore the services, programs and support available for families of children with special needs.
Cost for this special needs event is $18.00 per family and includes all programming and a kosher lunch. Reservations can be made by calling Melissa Bernstein at (214) 239-7134. Advance registration is required by May 15. Spaces are limited. About the Special Needs Initiative of the Jewish Federation on Greater Dallas
The Special Needs Initiative of the Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas is a consortium of Jewish organizations and Dallas leaders working to assist our citizens with special needs. The mission of the Initiative is “to lead the facilitation and activation of programs and resources that will meet the needs of our Jewish citizens with special needs and the expectations of their families”
Yachad’s mission is to promote and facilitate the inclusion of all people with disabilities. Yachad activities provide our members with opportunities for personal growth and enriched lives. The ‘inclusive design’ gives our special population their rightful place within the Jewish community, while helping to educate our community about our members’ abilities and strengths. Dallas Yachad is open to Children with Special Needs, including those with moderate to severe disabilities.
Jewish Family Service licensed professionals help those with special needs—and their families—identify specific concerns and develop appropriate coping skills and behaviors so they can fulfill their highest potential. We offer individual and group services for children with special needs and their parents and siblings. For adults with special needs, we offer individual and group counseling / support as well as assistance through all phases of employment. We maintain a Registry of Parents with Special-Needs Children so parents can connect to others in the community for peer support. (To join the registry, or for more information, please contact Shelly Middleman, PhD, Director of Special-Needs Services at 972.437.9950 or SMiddleman@JFSdallas.org.) In addition, we have compiled a “Special-Needs Resource List” for those who would like more information about specific special needs, as well as support and services that might be available from other mental-health, social-service, medical, or organizational resources. For more information about any of our services, please contact the Director of Special-Needs Services at 972.437.9950.
